In the News: “Removing Fences Makes Elephants Healthier and Leaves the Landscape Intact”
Recent international coverage featured on EIN Presswire highlights groundbreaking peer-reviewed research from Bring The Elephant Home, recently published in Ecology and Evolution (2026).
Led by Dr. Brooke Friswold (Regional Director Africa, BTEH) alongside BTEH Founder Dr. Antoinette van de Water and partners at Kariega Game Reserve, the study investigates the positive impacts of dropping internal reserve fences. Tracking 75 elephants over three years, the research revealed that expanding available space significantly reduces physiological stress levels, decreases aggression by 20%, and encourages natural social bonding—all while keeping surrounding vegetation intact.
