The BTEH Lab

The BTEH Lab

Since 2019, Bring The Elephant Home’s Elephant Research Program has supported long-term research on wild Asian elephants, human-elephant coexistence, and community-based conservation in Kuiburi National Park and surrounding communities. The BTEH Lab connects students, early-career researchers and aspiring conservationists with remote internship projects that contribute to this ongoing program, helping us better understand elephant behavior, population dynamics, and crop foraging patterns.

The lab is supervised by Ave Owen, a PhD student in the Conservation Ecology Program at King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi. Since September 2025, 14 interns have conducted projects through The BTEH Lab, contributing to literature reviews, data analysis, and the creation of field tools and research protocols. Lab members gain experience in conservation science and project development while addressing real conservation issues and research needs.

Remote projects with real conservation value

The BTEH Lab is designed to function like a graduate research lab, with lab members receiving feedback from their supervisor and peers while sharing field positions, grants, conferences, and other academic and professional opportunities within the group.

Remote internship periods coincide with the fall (September to December) and spring (January to April) terms and are designed to meet both the needs of BTEH’s Elephant Research Program and the skills of each lab member. Each project is designed to produce a clear output, and may involve reviewing scientific literature, organizing and analyzing data, developing field protocols, preparing research tools, or designing communication and education materials.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue supporting BTEH’s mission and to contribute to tools that can make a meaningful difference for Asian elephants.”
– Laura Griffiths, Miami University (The BTEH Lab: Fall 2025)
