Many of you in my life know that I have a deep passion and care for elephants and their continued safety and sustainable existence. My experience thus far has been through multiple trips in Thailand with Asian elephants where I learned a tremendous amount about the complexities of elephant tourism and the impact on the lives of these magnificant creatures.

My life was forever changed on that first trip in 2016 to Northern Thailand where I met many elephants who were living both chained with some freedom in camps, and one sanctuary where the elephants roamed free on the sanctuary grounds. It was my first exposure to a depth of understanding that these creatures have so much to teach us about how to hold both the light and the darkness of the world and how to cultivate joy even in the most difficult situations. Witnessing the kindness of the Thai caretakers and the efforts of the camps and sanctuaries I stayed at, to do the best they could for the elephants, fueled a fire in me to be a part of change for all elephants.

I’ve longed to support and work with Bring The Elephant Home (BTEH) for many years and at last, I will be joining them this April in South Africa as a volunteer for their ongoing crucial work in the conservation and well-being of wild elephants. This will be my first exposure to solely wild elephants and, I suspect will appeal to my desire to learn more about their behaviour and the ways in which BTEH and those they work with are endeavoring in their success with their conversation projects for the elephants and the communities. I am excited to bring my skills, my passion and my service to BTEH, to Kareiga Game Reserve and of course, to the elephants. It is my deepest longing to continue being a part of the dialogue and efforts to protect the wellbeing, survival and sustainability of these beings and the continued efforts with communities to live in harmony between humans and elephants.
